SATURDAY PHOTO HUNT–SHINY
Posted by Karen on Jun 22 2007

This week’s theme was tough for me. I went through 7 years of pictures and nothing jumped out and said, “Hey! Look at me! I’m shiny.” Then Nick and I took a field trip to the Franklin Park Conservatory for the annual butterfly garden exhibit. In the “chrysalis preparation” area, I spotted these–from the Tithorea tarricina butterfly from Costa Rica! So I snapped a picture with today’s Photohunt in mind. Of course, like most things, they were more impressive in real life, but I think you’ll still see that they shine! Beautiful!

These look pretty shiny to me. It was not an easy theme to find something. It sounds easy but not as it turned out.

Hi, I have seen Red Admiral chrysalis with small flecks of gold but nothing like those, it looks like they have been dipped in something.
Love the pictures down the side, are they part of what you do?
Cheers Mark

Those are great! Are they butterfly cocoons?
They are butterfly chrysalises. I didn’t know this until I started home schooling, but a butterfly makes a chrysalis, a moth makes a cocoon.
Useless trivia fact for you.

Wow! These are so shiny! I never knew a butterfly chrysalis could look like this! I have seen an insect, a beetle with the shape of a ladybug but with a bright metallic gold exoskeleton! Very fascinating!

Are those man-made or natural? They are amazing and beautiful.
Completely 100% natural. In about a week, butterflies will emerge from them!

Most of my ideas for photo hunters happen just a few hours before I have to post. These are cool looking to say the least, I am glad you found an appropiate thing for the theme at the last moment.
