QUESTIONS–IV

Posted by Karen on Jun 29 2007

Midsummer night asks, “I second the homeschooling questions. I really want to homeschool my boys so I am always curious about anyone who homeschools. I will throw in a fun one too. I have not been reading long, so you might have mentioned this somewhere but I will ask anyway. What was your favorite childhood book and your current favorite book?”

Great questions. I answered a home schooling question already, but if there is anything specific you want to know, just holler!

As for books. Wow. I LOVED books as a kid. I remember schleping them home from the library all the time. I’d lose myself in a good book and sometimes wouldn’t do much else. I’d probably say my favorite book as a kid was Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry. I read that book over and over. It helped that my sister owned an actual Chincoteague pony, and that I had attended pony penning days a couple of times. I also read the other books in that series, but Misty was by far my favorite.

As for books today. Well, I’m going to have to say I must love the book Marley and Me by John Grogan. Why do I say this? Because I’ve been reading it for approximately 8 months. Yeah, I know, it’s 304 pages. That means I’ve averaged about 1.3 pages per day. Problem is that now when I get a chance to read, I fall asleep! It’s a skill I acquired in nursing school. Many times my college roomies would find me in my bed sound asleep with my face lying on an open nursing text book! So, unfortunately I don’t read much for pleasure*. BUT….our library has an “adult summer reading program” that parallels the children’s program, so hopefully this summer I’ll read more than the Sunday paper!

*I did read Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey and stayed awake the whole time! And I’ve read all of the Harry Potter books to the kids and we’re looking forward to reading the final book in the series.

I’m really looking forward to a new Harry Potter book but at the same time I’m sad that it will be the last.

The Summer reading program sounds like fun. My husband is an avid reader but sadly I only seem to read on vacation.

Yes, it is bittersweet about Harry. I just must know what happens to him….in the end.

Misty of Chincoteague was one of my absolute favorites growing up too - two of my favorite things were books and horses. I like her other books too, but that one is definitely my favorite too. I’m so jealous that you’ve actually been there!

My husband is counting down the days (literally) until the last Harry Potter book and he plans on taking a couple of days off just to be able to read it (unpaid days, mind you - that’s still under debate). Unfortunately I won’t be able to get my hands on it until he’s done though, so maybe it’s not such a bad idea after all…

It will take us awhile to get through HP. We’ll read it as a read-aloud, so mostly during breakfast and lunch. But as it gets REALLY good, the kids will make me read 3 or 4 hours a day!

That looks like a hilarious book. I put it on hold at my library. I guess it is a good thing you own that book rather so you don’t have to worry about massive library fines.

I am actually finding more time than I thought I would have post kids when I make is a priority to read. It also helps that I am a super speed reader and can tear through a book in no time flat. I read the last Harry Potter in less than eight hours.

The book is pretty funny. Maybe it strikes a little too close to home for me because we HAD a psycho dog. Certifiable!!

We follow Dave Ramsey’s plan! We are finally out of debt, what a wonderful feeling!!!! I have never heard of “Misty of Chincoteague” or “Marley and Me”. I will have to look them up at the library. Thanks for the great answers.

Yeah! Glad to hear you made it out of debt. We’re still digging. But then again, it took us 15 years to get this way, I don’t expect to be out of it all in 6 months!

“I’d probably say my favorite book as a kid was Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry.” I remember reading Misty of Chincoteague as a child and loving it. I don’t know if it was my favorite, but it was definitely up there!
