I MAY HAVE JUST RUINED MY HOLIDAY IN ENGLAND

Posted by Karen on Sep 06 2007

Greg from Disney Visa phoned me yesterday.

He wanted to wish me well on my holiday to England.

Well, actually, he wanted to know if I was planning a trip on British Airways. Apparently, someone attempted to charge over $5,000 on airline tickets. I know it was more than $5,000, but after Greg said, “five-thousand,” the sound of my heart beating in my ear drowned out the last three numbers. I think it’s sufficient to say “a lot.”

Now, maybe Mike is planning a surprise trip to Great Britain. Just him and me. Without the kids. A romantic rendezvous in a foreign country. Maybe he already has reservations here or here or maybe here. And maybe today he went online to get the airline tickets.

Maybe by Greg calling, it ruined his surprise. I, of course, denied any knowledge of tickets to England. The charge did not go through. The card was cancelled and new ones are being shipped out.

So now I’m torn. Did I just prevent massive credit card fraud? Or did I ruin any chance of an incredible vacation to England?

I am betting on fraud. I would hope that your husband would discuss such a large purchase with you before he made it.

Well, I hope you didn’t just lose an awesome trip! But, credit card fraud SUCKS. I know, my husband’s identity was stolen two years ago and we’re still dealing with the aftermath.

Just for the record… If I spent $5,000 on ANYTHING without first discussing it with Karen, well… let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty. :)

Oh, keep us informed. If it were my life, credit card fraud would be my bet. But I’d love for it to be a secret surprise for you (he can always reschedule).

Thanks so much for your kind comment on my last post. See how nice you are!!!

    I’m so sorry, Karen!

Unfortunately, this can be how ID theft starts. Your card/info was compromised and others could be as well. If it were me, I’d get a copy of my credit report & call my other credit cards to alert them of a possible compromise. Sadly, I speak from family experience; if these steps had been taken immediately, it could have saved hours of work sorting it out, years of paranoid thoughts and several hundred thousand worth of ID fraud.

I think stopping possible credit card fraud is the more important thing. If Hubby was planning a surprise, he’ll understand. Maybe you could plan an England trip together!

Dr. Mike has spoken. So it’s clearly a fraud. To be duped with $5,000 dollars is not a joke! Glad you prevented it.
