I’M SICK OF BEING A GROWN UP
Posted by Karen on Mar 20 2008
Did you ever feel like you’ve just had enough?
Well, I’m done. I’m done being a grown up. I’m done having responsibility. I’m done done done done done.
Call it let down after my busy theater season. Or maybe it’s just seasonal affective disorder. Call it whatever you want, but don’t make me do any more grown up stuff. And make it warm. And sunny. Or I just might blow a gasket!
Why am I acting like this? Well, the straw that broke the camel’s back was all of the rain. I lost count…12 hours? 24 hours? 36 hours? I dunno, maybe a solid week of rain. Seemed like it anyway. And when it rains, things leak around here. Like our basement wall. 36 hours of rain makes it wet. Our sump pump runs every minute or so. And no, we don’t have a spare sump pump. And no, we don’t have battery back up. And yes, if our electricity went out, our basement (including Mike’s studio) would be flooded. When it rains this much a certain other thing leaks. And it’s scary. I don’t want to give specifics, but let’s just say water mixed with electricity is a very scary (and dangerous) thing. And I’m sure the previous owners of the house knew this “thing” leaked but failed to disclose it. And now we’re left with the problem.
And once, about 8 years ago, our roof leaked into our garage. It made a big, ugly mess of the drywall on the ceiling. We got the roof repaired, but never quite got around to the garage ceiling. I marked off the water stain with a crayon, so for 8 years I monitored it to see if the roof leaked any further. No, it did not. Just 3 months ago we had our contractor-neighbor tear down the damaged drywall and fix it all up. It was beautiful. For 3 months. And now, it’s leaking again. Not exactly in the same spot, but definitely in the area he fixed.
And yesterday I got up and found out our garden window sprung a leak. Yes, this garden window….

The garden window that was just installed about 5 years ago. The garden window that cost so much I had to sell a kidney to be able to afford it. The garden window that looks beautiful unless there is an inch of water sitting in the bottom of it. The garden window that had plants and papers and stuff in it when it started leaking. So now all of that is drying out. (Yes, Jenny, your coupons may look a little crinkly when you get them next.)
Yeah, the garden window is under a lifetime warranty. I just need to call the company who installed it and they’ll come and fix it. Or at the very least they’ll come down and scratch their head and say, “I dunno why it’s leaking.” I know I paid a premium for the window for that sort of warranty. I just don’t feel like doing it. I don’t feel like being a grown up and having to deal with it.
I really don’t want to deal with anything right now.

So maybe we want to go back to the theatre and hang out there. At least it doesn’t “seem” to leak. I’m sorry your SAD; this weather is for the ducks. However, the sun is out this morning and it’s beautiful so get out and soak up some rays.

I’m right there with you — being a grown up is waay too stressful. I hope everything dries up soon (I’m also with you on the puddles — our current apartment is full of leaks — from where, I don’t know — but I’m not liking the puddles in the basement).
Sending you lots of hugs — not too long until your vacation, right?

Cheer up! That post was way to depressing! Now just think how I must feel! Look what I have to look forward to!
See, you need to think about stuff like this before posting it! Now I am depressed too! Uggghhh! No fair! But on the bright side it is a beautiful and sunny day! So don’t be all sad! Just sing this in your head:
“Zipadee doo da! Zipadee-a! My oh my what a WONDERFUL day! Plenty of sun shine, heading my way! Zipadee do da! Zipadee-a!”
Just hope you don’t have a bluebird on your shoulder. Cause you would FREAK OUT!

Raining here in New England, too! And leaks? They truly are torturous. We had our 230-year-old chimneys rebuilt last April after a nor’easter, and guess what!? During last weekend’s storm, the dripdripdripdripdrip. Yes. I need me some sun too, and bad!

I know what you mean…you try to hold things together ALL the time…everyone has “other demands” on your time, etc. Then, the weather doesn’t cooperate..soon will be sunny and you’ll be out in the hot tub!! Me in the garden..can’t wait to see if the hundreds of bulbs I planted ALL come up without freezing their little heads off!!!
Hang in there!!

{{{HUGS}}} Sorry to hear about all the leaks. They are the worst! I know how stessed it can make you feel. Remember how stressed we were that Sunday you were here? Well the leak in the basement was the main reason why.
Happy to hear it is sunny there today. It is the first day of Spring and with it may it bring you joy and happiness.
Just think 5 weeks from tomorrow we’ll be in Florida together!

I know exactly what you mean! The other day the boys “sprung a leak” while having their bath and caused the floor to be covered in water…ugggh! We also had to get our roof repaired a couple of months ago when we had heavy rains and water leaked in our attic. That was fun…NOT! Who knew we had it so easy when we weren’t the grown ups?

I think it’s “end of a brutally long winter” syndrome. Thankfully you have a vacation coming up soon!

Oh, I wish I knew how to cheer you up!! I sure hope the rain has stopped by now. You could send some up here! It would sure help our snow disappear. Leaks are no fun. Been there, done that. And a whole basement full of water because of one stupid cracked eaves trough. NO FUN AT ALL. I hope things will brighten up and dry out soon!!

Oh yeah, I definitely feel like giving up this ‘grown-up’ gig every so often. Why were we in such a big hurry to grow up when we were kids? I’d love to have my biggest worries be what to watch for quiet time and where I left my favorite stuffed animal at.
I hope the rain has stopped by now (did you get hit by this latest snow storm?) and everything is drying out for you. It’s been a looooonnnnnggggg winter and I think we’re all feeling it - I know I am. I wanted to cry when I saw all the snow coming down yesterday… Sigh. At least it’s starting to melt today.
