HAVE I TAUGHT THEM NOTHING ABOUT NUTRITION??

My absolute least favorite thing about making dinner is deciding what to have. I don’t mind the shopping, or the cooking, or the cleaning up. I just can’t stand the age old question, “What’s for dinner?” I’ll ask Mike, “What do you want for dinner tonight?” And his response is usually, “I don’t care.” (sigh) Yeah, so not helpful!
Yesterday was one of those days when I was just tired of making the dinner decisions. I knew it probably should include some leftover ham, but beyond that I was clueless.
I’m not sure exactly how it happened, but suffice it to say there was a turn of events in the house. Suddenly I was banned from the kitchen, and the kids were preparing dinner! If they even thought I was peeking, I got yelled at!
So much for the wonderful Whole Foods cooking classes. Nevermind the gourmet Chilean sea bass.
This is what my dinner looked like last night…..

Starting at the top left…that’s Pirate’s Booty. Commonly eaten as a snack, it’s now apparently a side dish. Then we have a strawberry. Ok, technically it looks like two strawberries. Then there is a Peep. But only one. Not ten! I’m glad it was a yellow Peep, because everyone knows the pink ones are totally inappropriate to serve with Pirate’s Booty! Ok, moving on….the leftover ham gets the big compartment. And then, surprise, a salad! It wasn’t like I was spying or anything, but this item was actually Nick’s idea. Nick who will only eat vegetables under protest.
I guess, technically, all 4 food groups are covered….
Meat/protein–ham and rabbit
Grains–Pirate’s Booty (puffed rice and corn)
Fruits/veggies–Salad and strawberries
Dairy–Pirate’s Booty. It is made with aged cheddar cheese after all!

i loved pirates booty, looks like a pretty balanced meal to me they say the more colors on your plate the more nutrition and that plate is definitely colorful!

What’s with the “Aunt Fran” tray?
Looks yummy. Pirate’s Booty? OK! Way to help out the Momma Nick and KT! You’re more than welcome to come over and cook for us any time you’d like!

Hilarious! I agree with LBC “If I don’t have to do it myself, then you have done it correctly”.

My husband is horribly unhelpful when it comes to dinner. We have a rule that if someone shoots down a dinner idea they have to think of a replacement idea.

Fantastic. I can’t wait until my gal can cook dinner for us! (though she probably would right now, if someone asked her to…but nobody wants squished banana, half-eaten grapes, and spitty milk.)

I think it was a good attempt. At least they covered the color spectrum.

Yes, what DID you have to drink? Was it a nice glass of Merlot? Because if I have a nice glass of wine, the food is secondary.

Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving immediately came to mind when I saw the photo… when Snoopy prepares the Thanksgiving Feast… toast, jelly beans, pretzels, etc (after fighting with the folding chair)… my favorite holiday show ever!

Hey, I’d eat that if I didn’t have to cook it!
Ron and I go back and forth all of the time (when he’s home, that is) about dinner - the conversation’s generally on the order of, ‘hey, any thoughts about dinner?’ ‘Nope, how about you?’, ‘Nope’. And 2 hours later we’ll still trying to figure it out…

I too get unhelpful answers like ” Whatever”. Once I have a set idea for a meal, it is no problem, I can run with it and enjoy doing it, but having to think about it then buy for it is not my favourite pastime. I so like going “Out” to dinner be it to a restaurant or a friends as that is the decision taken out of my hands.
Mind you going to restaurants these days is getting to be quite an expensive hobby here in Aus.
Take Care

It’s a perfect dinner.
A - it has all the food groups represented.
B - YOU didn’t have to dream it up or prepare it.
I’ll take KT and Nick any day fixin’ my dinner!!
