BABIES WIN, AND YOU MAY TOO!
Posted by Karen on Apr 15 2008

Some of you who know me in real life, may have heard me talk about Baby Evan. For the others, let me give you a quick catch up….
Our good friends gave birth to their first baby in August of 1997. They did not know their time with him would be short….way too short. See, Evan was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome–basically one of the worst heart defects out there. Shortly after his birth, he was transported to Columbus Children’s Hospital and was diagnosed with this heart defect. I won’t get into the nitty gritty, but his first surgery when he was 4 days old (not a total repair, just a temporary fix) did not go as planned. Although everything seemed to be where it was supposed to be, the heart would not pump blood correctly. Baby Evan passed away in the OR leaving family and friends grieving.
A lot has happened in the years since. Bob and Cathy welcomed Gillian and Gavin into their lives–both healthy and active. But the memories of Evan will always remain. And Cathy will always fight for the health of children. As long as I can remember, Cathy has done the yearly March of Dimes walk, and this year is no different. She has a goal this year to collect $1000 to go towards helping all children be born healthy.
I know I can count on my readers to help out. And it’s a win-win situation….
Here’s the scoop….
For every $10 you donate using the button above or below, you get one entry into the contest.
What’s the prize?
$50.00 Or more!
Now, the smoke and mirrors tricky part is this…..There will automatically be one $50 prize no matter how much money this little project earns. So if Cathy only gets $20 from my efforts, I give away $50.
But….Once the donations get to $300 (only through clicking on the link provided), I’ll put in another $50 prize! That’s right!! If $290 is earned, I give away $50. If $300 is earned, I give away another $50!!
But that’s not all….Once the donations get to $700, I’ll throw in a third $50 prize!!
In summary….Each and every $10 you donate gets you one entry. Donate $50, get 5 entries. Simple as that.
One automatic $50 prize.
A second $50 prize if verified* donations get to $300.
A third $50 prize if verified donations get to $700!!!
You can have your prizes in cash (Paypal) or in any gift card that I have in my area or can obtain online. You like IKEA? I’ll get you a gift card there. You need gas? I’ll get you one to BP. You’d rather eat? Olive Garden, McDonalds, Sonic, Whole Foods, name your poison. You want just about anything? Amazon.com is what you need.

You have from right now until I return from vacation to donate. So from now until 11pm Ohio time on Sunday, May 11th. Yes, the walk is on April 27th, but you will be allowed to donate after that too. But don’t wait. Donate now. Let’s put Cathy over goal by the time she dons her tennis shoes!
This is open to everyone, world-wide. International readers, I’d love it if you picked the Paypal option or Amazon.com to make it easy and quick for me to get your prize to you.
*Remember, only the people who click through this link will be eligible! How will I know? Well, as soon as you donate, you will get an email confirming your donation (save this for tax purposes). What you’ll need to do to alert me to your donation is forward that email to me (ohiominnie at gmail dot com). There isn’t anything on that email that will give away any of your credit card information. It will only have your name, the date, and the amount you donated. That’s what I’ll use to verify your donation.

While the MOD does great things, they are actually not interested in using any of the money they get donated towards heart defect research. Even the American Heart Association is bad about giving research money to children’s heart defects. If you send them money you have to specify a specific fund (which I can remember off the top of my head at this moment) to get your dollars to count. I find this very sad since heart defects are the most common birth defect. Give your friend a hug from me.
Karen here….while figuring out the causes and prevention of heart defects is near and dear to Cathy’s heart (pun intended), her goal transcends any one birth defect. She fights for all babies with all sorts of issues.

Hi all. I’m not sure about the MOD funding actual research, but I know they are directly responsible for passage of the Ohio Birth Defects Registry in 2001, which is used for research and education purposes. So they are playing a very important role.

Currently, the March of Dimes research money is going toward finding answers about premature birth. However, the mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. This is accomplished through
many facets, including legislation for birth defects registries (still not available in every state) and newborn screening for birth defects, local grants for the health of pregnant women, distributing information about prevention factors for birth defects and premature birth, and much more. Research in any field of birth defects obviously benefits from state birth defects registries. Even without direct money going to fund heart research at this time, families and babies, both sick and healthy, have been and continue to be helped by the March of Dimes in countless ways. I encourage you to visit the March of Dimes website to find out more, and to volunteer if you have the opportunity.

Hey, I wanted you to know that Parker’s wipes are already getting quite the workout! I even took a few up to Primary’s on our last two trips. The nurses were soooo impressed! Even Parker’s surgeon supports cloth diapers and wipes! Yea! We LOVE this man!
If you ever want to sell these, let me know and I can help you get started via a cloth diapering site I visit. You would do a AWESOME business!
Big, big hugs. You simply have a heart of GOLD!
