SOME MORE GOOD QUESTIONS

Laura says….

I’m new to the blog, so not sure if you covered this before but I was wondering how you and Dr. Mike came to the decision to home school your children verses sending them to a private Christian school. I imagine cost had something to do with it, but what what were the other reasons? Did they ever attend a formal school setting when they were younger?

Well, if you wonder why we homeschool to begin with, I’m going to direct you to these two posts:
Why we homeschool part 1
Why we homeschool part 2

Ok, moving on to your specific questions….

Private schools are not a good option for us. It’s not the cost as much as it is our location. The closest private school is 30 minutes away. Now, before my dad comments about how I went to a private school that was 30 minutes from my house, let me also add….our current school district does not provide transportation to the school. Even though we pay a bazillion and fifty-two dollars to our local school system through taxes, they provide nothing for us.

Now, we’d make the sacrifice and drive both ways every day if it could provide what we need for our kids. Both of them are very involved in theater. Neither care much for sports. The private school is somewhat small with limited extra curricular activities. The ones they do have are all focused around sports. They don’t have a drama department to speak of. What would end up happening is I’d have to drive 30 minutes to the west every day for school (once to drop off, then again to pick up) and then drive an hour east to get to town for theater rehearsals in the evening. That would get really old, really fast.

KT did attend public school at one point. As you probably read in the linked posts above, she was in kindergarten at the local elementary school for most of that year. Nick has never attended any sort of school other than here at home.

I would love to hear more about how you started Nick off in school. Evan will be school aged pretty soon and I am wondering how you introduced the whole concept of schooling.

Thank you so much for your blog. We’ve got a son in a traditional Kindergarten, and your blog has got us thinking. I’m glad your back from vacation!
PS- my husband loves the picture of the “Straight” Tower of Pisa!!

That is the most rational explanation for home schooling I’ve heard. You are the perfect kind of parent to do home school.

I wish I had the patience to homeschool. It would have made the last month of school implosion a lot easier to handle. But I can’t do it. A and I would kill each other.
