SUMMER ACTIVITY IDEA FOR THE SMOCKLADY

Posted by Karen on May 15 2008

Fellow blogger SmockLady has asked for summer activities to keep her kids entertained this summer. Apparently it gets “Africa hot” where she lives and she needs good, cheap, entertaining, and most importantly, indoor ideas.

She’s holding a little contest for some very cool Puzzibits.

I tried to play along. I told her duct tape was cheap. And that she should tape up her kids and let them spend the day untaping themselves or their siblings. For some reason she didn’t like that idea. Something about Children’s Services yada yada.

Anyway, I thought I’d share an idea with her…and it definitely fits in with the “cheap” and “indoor” requirements. As for “good” and “entertaining,” well, your mileage may vary.

First, start with a paper bag over a kid’s head. If you want to really mess them up for life, tell them they are so ugly they need to wear a paper bag over their head. Hey, my dad said that to me when I was young! Does that explain anything?

Anyway, moving on….Cut out some shoulder “holes” so the bag fits down lower. Determine where eye holes should be and then after removing the bag cut out where you marked.

Now the fun starts. Have the kids decorate the bags any way they want. Markers, crayons, glue, feathers, pom-poms, sequins, glitter–anything is game. Of course, you could get really creative and make certain characters and then act out a play. Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Little Red Riding Hood. Or for the more advanced kids, Macbeth.

Here’s KT sporting a bag….

And then there is Nick. Uh, Nick….next time use a plain brown paper bag!

Here’s what I mean by “cutting out shoulder holes”

And when all else fails, it’s a great cheap, entertaining, indoor activity for the cat too!

Do I have to wait until the bag is off the head to cut out the holes?

Looks like fun…boxes are a hit in my house. Hours of fun, and being a military family there are many resorces for them!

Thanks for stopping by my blog…YES Soymilk is the best…unlike cows milk you can fix with citrus and it tastes great.

    HEY, LEAVE NICK ALONE….
    He’s recycling!!!!
(And he didnt have to spend time decorating the bag…)
    Too funny.
The tape idea was good too…how about sitting them on the brick front steps, tied up and then letting them fall….
o come on…you remember what your “other” sister did…

We’ve successfully mutilated a fair share of paper bags in our house. I think my favorite was turning one into a vest, that my 4 year old decorated. It was a hoot, she was a tad disappointed that it fell apart before she could wear it to school.

The shoulder cut outs are such a good idea. I don’t think I have ever heard of teat and it is such a good idea. I will remember it next time. Fun post.

i posted my suggestion of making a cardboard tv out a box and then acting out the news/tv shows…. for some reason this would keep us busy for hours as kids

Now…where exactly am I supposed to find these bags since I take my canvas ones? LOL! I will have to do this, though! Once I find some bags…

OK. That is one of the best things I have seen! Off to get some bags and do THAT this weekend!
    You are the best!
